CHARLOTTE - Arm in arm, wiping tears from their eyes, loved ones held an impromptu memorial in West Charlotte, just hours after losing one of their own.
Police said Damien Wright, 16, shot and killed Khalil Cousart, 13, around 1 a.m. Tuesday. Family and friends placed flowers and signs where police found Cousart's body, yards from a church and where he attended youth group.
"He's in a better place but this killing needs to stop,” said his older brother, Kyvante Orr. “All of it is senseless.”
Family members describe Khalil as a playful jokester, always with a smile on his face. They're now struggling to understand how another teen could do this, who many said was his friend.
"I'm mad I wasn't here to save him, or just try,” cried Orr. “But I just wanted to let him know I love him.”
Jail records show the suspect, Damien Wright, has a history with the law. He was arrested twice earlier this year for charges ranging from drugs to possession of a handgun by a minor.
"We're going to get through it and we're going to get through it together," said Kierra Orr, Coursart's older sister
