As thousands of students head back to college, the U.S. Fire Administration is reminding them about fire safety.
The department says there have been 79 fatal fires on or near U.S. college campuses since 2000.
Most of those cases have been caused by the misuse of candles, incense, or smoking inside.
Officials at N.C. Central University say those items are not allowed in campus housing and they just want to keep students safe.
“When they come to school, they need to be very safe. So for their safety, if a fire alarm goes off, whether it's a malfunction in the system or whatever, they need to leave the building," said NCCU official Jennifer Wilder.
Every college in North Carolina has specific fire safety codes, and can be found on the school's web site.
