CHAPEL HILL (AP) -- Tyler Joyner allowed one hit in nearly five innings of relief to help East Carolina beat Cornell 10-6 on Saturday in an elimination game in the NCAA tournament's Chapel Hill Regional.
Jay Cannon drove in two runs to lead the second-seeded Pirates (36-23-1), who pushed ahead for good with a five-run fifth inning then added three more runs in the seventh to get some cushion. Cannon had an RBI double while John Wooten had a run-scoring single during the seventh.
Joyner (6-2) came on in the fifth for starter Kevin Brandt and finished with three strikeouts in 4 2-3 innings.
Tom D'Alessandro and Ben Swinford each had two RBIs for the fourth-seeded Big Red (31-17-1), who lost to host North Carolina on Friday. Cornell was making its second NCAA appearance and first since 1977.
Brian McAfee (6-1) took the loss, allowing eight hits and six runs in 4 2-3 innings.
