CHARLOTTE -- A Charlotte native is gearing up for a two month cross country bicycle ride, raising money and building affordable homes along the way.
Jenna Woodruff wouldn't call herself an avid cyclist, but come this weekend, that's all about to change.
"We're going straight through Colorado. We go through Aspen up through Utah, so I'm just hoping by the time I get to that point, I have my legs underneath me," said Woodruff.
The 25-year-old will spend the majority of the next two and a half months right there on her bicycle, as she participates in the Bike & Build program with 30 other cyclists.
"I do feel like, creeping towards my 30s, I'm getting to a point where you're supposed to settle down and you're supposed to have a full-time job, and I just kind of want to make sure I get these things in while I can,” said Woodruff.
They cycle more than 4,100 miles, starting in Charleston, S.C., and ending in Santa Cruz, Calif. But as they bike cross-country, they're doing it for a good cause, making stops along the way.
"We'll come into towns and we'll actually have blitz builds where we'll wake up in the morning and we build on a project, whether it's Habitat for Humanity or Rebuilding Together, and we'll kind of build for that day, and cycle out the next morning and do a few days,” said Woodruff.
From a young age, she's been an active volunteer in her community, and around the world.
"I just think it's important to take what you've been given and what you've been blessed with and figuring out what your talents and your passions are and give back to people who maybe aren't as fortunate,” she said.
That's where her passion for helping the homeless and impoverished developed.
"I don't think people realize how many homeless people or low-income families or how many houses are in disarray in our own city that need people's help, their volunteer hours, their money that they have to put them back together, because a lot of people can't do it for themselves,” said Woodruff.
So for the next couple of months, she'll be pedaling, building and fundraising for affordable housing.
