CHINA GROVE—A West Rowan High School senior is taking fundraising to new heights.
Tyler Goodson, 18, climbed to the roof of a China Grove restaurant early Saturday morning, hoping to bring attention to a family in need. The West Rowan High School senior was on the roof of Porky’s BBQ since 7 a.m.; armed with sunscreen and plans to stay all day.
"It brings attention to the area, you know, you see somebody on a roof you want to see why they're up there. I am raising money for the Cowden family," said Goodson.
Tom Cowden is the son of West Rowan High School Assistant Principal, Nelson Cowden. At 13-years-old he was diagnosed with brain cancer. But last month, Tom Cowden lost his two-year battle at the age of 15.
"They thought he was doing well and then one night they woke up and he was in there struggling and he passed away," said Goodson.
Goodson is hoping to raise $1,000 from the rooftop event, to help the family pay steep medical bills. Making an already difficult time easier, for the assistant principle he said has always helped him.
"If somebody's bothering my little brothers at school he was there to help, if I needed extra classes on the computer he was there to support me on that," said Goodson.
Goodson has already raised hundreds for the Cowden's, and plans to raise even more after the restaurant closes Saturday night.
The Tom Cowden 5k happening May 20 will be held at Sloan Park in Mount Ulla.
