MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. -- Monday morning a group of World War II veterans in gathered in Morehead City and the hot topic was the upcoming honor flight. Many of those veterans have visited the WWII memorial in Washington, D.C. but Veterans Affairs officer Hank Gotard says there are many more who haven't.

"There's a lot of veterans over in Jacksonville and there's a lot of veterans around this country," he said. "It's not limited to here. We'll take anybody. If somebody wants to raise their hand and they want to come to Carteret County or they have a family member here we want to bring them too."

The Honor Flight Network has taken over 80,000 veterans to the memorial since 2005. The Military Order of the Purple Heart Beirut Memorial Chapter 642 is working to raise funds and recruit veterans for the next flight. Grant Beck says his chapter wants to make sure no veteran is left out.

"One thousand to 1,200 of the WWII vets each day are leaving us and we want to make sure that we give them the opportunity to see the memorial that was built specifically to honor their service," he said.

Organizers are still seeking donations to help fund the upcoming May honor flight. For information on how help you can call Carteret County Veterans Services at (252) 728-8440 or the Military Order of the Purple Heart at (910) 455- 1353.
