PITTSBORO, N.C.--There’s almost always music being played at the Pittsboro shop where Carr Amplifiers are made.

"Three times it gets played through and the last sort of more extensively," said Steve Carr, owner of Carr Amplifiers.

Before going into the business of constructing amplifiers, Carr played music and thought about pursuing a career on stage.

Although there was no fame, that experience prepared him for his business.

"Everyone who works here is a musician and so we really care about the product and we use the amplifiers. There's a certain, you know, sort of magic I would say, into building it by hand and by musicians,” said Carr.

One of the features that sets Carr Amplifiers apart from the competition is something that an audience wouldn’t detect, but that a musician can feel.

"There is a certain flavor that's throughout in our line and there is, I think, and it's got to do with that touch sensitivity," said Carr.

Carr has been in business since 1998, when it became part of the first wave of boutique amplifier outfits.

There is still a market for the sound, even among well-known professional musicians.

"Perhaps one of the most well-known guys is Joe Perry of Aerosmith. He has one of our Mercuries. We've sold multiple amps to Wilco," said Carr.
