The most popular product made by Wilmington’s Half United is a necklace that holds three bullet casings.

"We take three bullets and we stack them together and the middle bullet is painted with car paint and it's all hand-done here in Wilmington," said Christian Black, of Half United.

The necklace is designed to look good and be interesting but also to say something.

"These three bullet shells represent the fight against global hunger," Carmin Black, of Half United, said.

"It's a bold statement. It's a bullet that usually represents fighting in a, in a negative sense,” said Christian Black.

Those who buy the necklace or any of Half United’s other products fight hunger as a result of the company’s business model.

"What we do is we give half of our profits away for every item we sell to feed kids in need,” Christian Black said.

Splitting its profits to feed kids goes a long way in defining Half United, but there is also attention to style and making items that people want.

“The business model can be really cool and, you know, the give-back model can be interesting, but if you don't have a great product that you're offering people, you're going to have one-time customers," said Carmin Black.

So far, in three years, Half United has provided more than 55,000 meals, some for kids in Wilmington but most overseas through nonprofit agencies that are on the ground.

The brother and sister team says that sales improve every month.
