RALEIGH -- The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and families across the country are getting ready to hit the highways for the holiday. AAA expects this year to be a busy one. The amount of travelers will rival the record numbers we've seen in the last decade. They also believe low gas prices have played a role in this years holiday travel.

Right now the national average is $3.38 per gallon and AAA officials say those low prices are fueling travel this summer.

Drivers in North Carolina are paying about 14 cents less that the average American at about $3.24 per gallon. The Charlotte area and the Triangle have some of the highest averages in the state at $3.26 per gallon. People in the Triad are paying about $3.22 for a gallon of regular and drivers on the coast are seeing some of the lowest averages in the state at $3.20 per gallon.

The holiday travel period officially kicks off on Tuesday.
