RALEIGH – Defense attorneys grilled an eyewitness who placed Jason Young on the road the day his wife was murdered.
Young is charged with beating his pregnant wife to death in 2006. He has testified that he was in Virginia on a business trip when his wife was killed. In his first trial last year, Young said he never left the hotel the night he checked in.
But a key state's witness disagreed.
Gas station clerk Gracie Calhoun said she saw Young that morning at her Stokes County gas station.
She said she remembered Young's stop during the early morning hours because he got so upset when he had to come inside to pay for the gas.
The defense challenged Calhoun's memory, saying statements she made about his appearance in 2006 don't match up.
They pointed to Calhoun's own admission that she couldn't remember his appearance or other purchases made around the time she said Young was there.
“I have been through a lot of stuff myself,” said Calhoun, “so my brain, I can't remember half of what went on and then I can sometimes.”
But Calhoun insisted – again – that it was Jason Young at her store.
Other testimony raised questions about Young's demeanor. One of Michelle Young's friends broke down while describing her conversation with Jason.
“I said I'm sorry for your loss,” said friend Valerie Bolick. “His response was very odd. He said, 'Cassidy's been a real trooper.'”
In other testimony, the medical examiner said that Michelle Young died from blunt force trauma to her head.
