MONCURE, N.C. -- Chatham County leaders held a public meeting Wednesday night to talk with residents about plans to run treated waste water from a proposed new waste water facility through the county to the Cape Fear River.
The proposed facility would only serve Cary, Apex, Holly Springs and Morrisville. Those towns have asked Chatham County commissioners to approve the discharge line.
Some say they were getting the raw end of the deal. They've been fighting against it, publicly and in court, for years. That's because the facility will not benefit or serve Chatham County at all.
The plans call for a discharge line, carrying treated waste water, to run from the Wake County facility through about eight miles of the southeastern part of the Chatham County, near New Hill and Merry Oaks.
People at the meeting said they would be losing parts of their land and their property values will drop.
“There will be more traffic in there and it might have a little bit of smell to it,” said Woodrow Goodwin, who lives by the area affected by the proposed discharge line.
“This is the water that's been treated and it's on its way to the the ultimate discharge in the Cape Fear River,” said Cary Public Works Director Steve Brown. “So, it's been treated to all the regulatory standards.”
Chatham County Commissioners were taking notes at the meeting and listening to those who spoke. They say they are working with the Wake County towns to address resident's concerns. The towns hope to get approval and begin construction next year. The facility could open as soon as 2013.
