GARNER, N.C. – Garner's EMS and Rescue Squad Chief resigned Tuesday after a sexual assault investigation involving the town's EMS and rescue squad personnel began. Authorities say the sexual assault happened September 1 at an office space previously leased by the squad.

"Frustration and probably a little anger and disappointment," Garner's Mayor Ronnie Williams said of the news.

This comes after learning the town's EMS and Rescue Squad Chief Bill Frederick had stepped down. The move came just days after EMS personnel were named in a sexual assault incident that occurred in an adjacent, unoccupied EMS office space.

"I heard there were two people involved,” said Williams. “Both of them were employees. One of them was the person who made the claims against the other person for inappropriate actions, so to speak. But I understand there's one male and one female and the female reported the incident to the police."

The incident is raising questions about just what happened and who was involved. "There is a direct association I'm sure in the minds of the public between the resignation and the activity,” said Williams.

EMS and Rescue Squad Board President Ralph Smith said Frederick gave no indication about why he was leaving the post, saying only that it was for personal reasons.

In the wake of the resignation, Garner EMS and Rescue officials have named Vance Haywood as the interim chief. He will serve in the position for the next 90 days until a permanent replacement can be found.

"Make sure the agency continues to run. Make sure our customers know that there's going to be no interruption of service. Make sure that everyone's needs are met and make sure that our staff's taken care of,” said Haywood. “And we'll get into the 90 days and start looking forward and see how we can move the agency forward beyond that 90 days."

Meanwhile, Garner Police will continue their investigation. It remains to be seen who, if anyone, will be named or charged in the case.
