RALEIGH – Jury selection began Tuesday for the trial of a young man charged with killing an Apex High School student in 2008.

Ryan Hare faces first degree murder charges in the death of Matthew Silliman.

It's been nearly two years since investigators discovered Silliman's body in an empty home in New Hill after he had been missing for a week.

Prosecutors say Silliman was beaten, tied up, had a plastic bag on his head and duct tape over his mouth. They say Hare and three other teens lured Silliman to the mobile home and drugged him.

An autopsy report shows Silliman died of asphyxiation and also suffered blunt force trauma to his head from a hammer.

Wake County deputies have also charged Aaddil Khan, Allegra Dahlquist and Drew Shaw in connection with Silliman's death.

Khan and Dahlquist pleaded guilty to second degree murder and conspiracy charges last month.

"She did play a role in the death of Matt Silliman,” said Collin Cook, Dahlquist's attorney. “She has acknowledged responsibility for the role she played. She's tremendously remorseful."

Shaw has not entered a plea deal but all three have agreed to testify against Hare.

"From our client's perspective, and that of the codefendants, and I believe the state as well at this point, Ryan Hare would be the most culpable of the four codefendants," said Cook.

Last month, Hare pleaded not guilty to first degree murder charges.

His attorney says prosecutors have not offered him a plea deal.

Jury selection could last through the rest of the week.

The trial is set to begin on Monday.
