RALEIGH – For the fifth time this summer, high bacteria levels have part of Lake Wheeler closed.

Wake County officials say the lake is closed to primary contact recreation, which includes swimming and any other activities where your head could go underwater.

“The launch area is downstream of two large storm water pipes; we suspect that's a reason we keep having failures there,” said Kathryn Hobby, a registered environmental health specialist and watershed manager.

Water quality experts will keep testing the lake's bacteria levels daily. If the tests show levels are back to an acceptable level, the beach area could be reopened by Sunday.
