RALEIGH -- A defense attorney in the murder trial of 63-year-old Leslie Smith claims a Wake County woman may have committed, "suicide by boyfriend." Smith is accused of shooting his girlfriend, 48-year-old Jaquelyn Gore in his Wake Forest home in July 2009.
Gore was the daughter of Jackie Gore, a member of the well known beach music band, the Embers.
Smith's attorney says Gore was a heavy drinker, suffered from depression and had suicidal thoughts. He says Gore provoked his client to shoot her either through a barrage of insults or because she wanted to be killed.
The trial is expected to continue for weeks.
