RALEIGH – Officials are investigating after a hit-and-run boating accident killed one woman an injured another at about 10 p.m. Sunday at a cove on the Mayo Lake in Person County.

Witnesses say it looked as if a boat ran into a pontoon boat. After the accident, a man says he rushed over to help, but it was too late.

“The guy did not know where his wife was, so we tried making a patter, started driving around in circles, and we found a lady under water,” rescuer Eric Justason said.

Witnesses say the boat driver took off. Three others were in the pontoon boat at the time. One suffered minor injuries and is expected to be OK.
