SELMA, N.C. – Investigators are looking into what they call a “suspicious” fire in Johnston County that claimed the lives of a mother in her 20s and her 1-year-old child. The three alarm fire broke out shortly after 4 a.m. Wednesday at the Redwood Village Apartments in Selma.

The victims' names have not yet been released.

Shaneisha Williams, the victims' downstairs neighbor, is trying to make sense of it all.

“It's just crazy that something like that could happen, and I just saw her and so it's like a person can be here and then gone the next,” Williams said. “It's crazy.”

Investigators said the fire started in one of the apartment on the second floor.

It took firefighters about 10 minutes to control the flames. Selma Fire Chief Phillipo McDaniel said most of the damage was in the living room of the apartment. Authorities are now looking into whether or not the fire alarm was working.

Two SBI agents were called to investigate the fire, which is routine when there's a fatality. But an arson investigator was also called to the scene.

The Red Cross was on hand to help three families who were displaced.
