CHAPEL HILL – The promotion of the upcoming North Carolina Literary Festival brought Elizabeth Edwards to the University of North Carolina campus at Chapel Hill Wednesday. There, she talked about her recently released second book, "Resilience: Reflections on the Burdens and Gifts of Facing Life's Adversities."

"I think of it more as a conversation with people who have been through or are facing sort of any kind of hurdle," Edwards said.

Edwards has faced many hurdles, including her personal battle with cancer.

"I get slight growths every once in awhile and then I get a slight reduction some place. It basically evens it out," she said.

Another hurdle involves the investigation of her husband, John Edwards, former North Carolina senator and presidential candidate, for possible campaign contribution violations and now, recent speculation that he fathered a child with Rielle Hunter, his former mistress.

In the midst of everything else, Edwards managed to recently open Red Window, a furniture store in Chapel Hill.

"Last night, I opened a fortune cookie and it said, ‘You will be unusually successful in business.' From the fortune cookie to God's ears," Edwards said.

Not only will you find customers at her store, but also Elizabeth's fans.

"I think she's a warm sincere person," Robert Mihaly, of Durham, said.

"Hats off to this woman, intelligent, a role model," Susan Stafford, who was also shopping for furniture, said.

But to Edwards, she's just a mother doing her job.

"Honestly, I don't think of myself as that much different from most mothers who have other things to do besides take care of their kids, which itself is a full-time job," Edwards said.

The North Carolina Literary Festival will be held at UNC Chapel Hill from Sept. 10 through 13.
