RALEIGH – It has been more than a week since state lawmakers missed the deadline to pass a two-year budget, and time is running out on their temporary resolution.

Lawmakers have until Wednesday, July 15 to pass a budget according to the temporary spending measure they passed last week. They’re being urged to work as quickly as possible to get it done.

Gov. Perdue recently unveiled her plan ton increase sales and sin taxes, as well as taxes on services. The proposal would raise up to $1.6 million.

Some lawmakers say they welcome Perdue’s help in figuring out how to mend the budget gap, but they are still at an impasse. In fact, some say there is still a lot of disagreement between the N.C. House and N.C. Senate, and as a result the General Assembly may miss its new deadline.

"My opinion? Probably not,” said Sen. David Hoyle in regards to if they will make the deadline. “And the governor is not happy with that, she told us so today. But, this is a three-day bill so there is a concurrence vote. It is going to be difficult."

If lawmakers do not finalize a budget by next Wednesday, they’ll have to pass another continuing resolution to allow state government to keep running.
