RALEIGH – Lawmakers are still hard at work trying to develop a new two-year spending plan by the end of this month. The process has brought together a number of groups who have formed the Together N.C. coalition.

The group is made up of more than 80 non profits, service providers and professional associations. Their goal is to reach out to lawmakers who are currently working on the budget.

Right now, the N.C. House is working on its incarnation of the budget. The latest estimates put the deficit near the $4 billion mark. As a result, House members know their cuts will be deeper than the Senate and Gov. Perdue’s versions.

Together N.C. does not want to see major program cuts go into effect, so the organization is asking for a tax increase. They say doing so would present a more-balanced approach to closing the budget gap.

The group plans to rally outside the legislative building Tuesday to prove their point.
