RALEIGH – One man's quick action may have saved a truck driver's life Monday night after a fiery crash on Interstate 40.
Two men were still in the hospital Tuesday night, one of whom faces charges, after the 7 p.m. wreck near the Wade Avenue split.
State troopers say an Isuzu Rodeo clipped a tractor-trailer while trying to get off on the Wade Avenue exit. The Isuzu's driver, Osmar Perez-Vicente, lost control of the vehicle, crossing all four lanes of traffic before hitting a Honda minivan
A second tractor-trailer slammed into the Rodeo and crossed the median, where it then hit a Dodge Charger. The tractor-trailer then overturned, spilling the trash it was carrying before catching on fire.
Clay Roberson saw the whole thing as he drove to work Monday night.
"It was like watching a movie, but this is real life here,” said Roberson, a Time Warner Cable sales representative.
Roberson acted quickly, pulling the tractor-trailer's driver, 48-year-old Robert Leffer, from the cab. Leffer is now in critical condition at the UNC Memorial Burn Center.
Roberson said everything happened "so quick and so fast."
"My initial reaction was 'Oh my God, this man is on fire.' I've never seen anyone on fire in my life. He was engulfed in flames. He had a shirt on, the shirt was gone. It was incinerated,” Roberson said.
He pulled off his shirt to cover Leffer and put out the flames.
“I'm trying to pat him out, just hoping we could get this fire out as fast as possible,” Roberson said.

All that was left along I-40 at the crash site Tuesday was burned trees and garbage. State Highway Patrol troopers say they can't believe no one was killed in the crash.
"That there weren't more serious injuries, or fatalities, at that time of day, around 6:50 in the afternoon – this is a heavily traveled section of interstate. It's absolutely amazing,” said Trooper Beckley Vaughan.
But Roberson contends what he did isn't that amazing – and now, he's just worried for Leffer.
"I'm praying for him. I'm hoping that everything comes out well,” he said.
State troopers are charging Osmar Perez-Vicente with reckless driving and driving without a license. He is at Wake Med in serious condition.
Leffer's family didn't want to comment, but did ask for prayers as he heals.
