APEX, N.C. – Wake County parents got their first chance Monday to tell school board members directly what they think about the proposed student reassignment plan.

Public hearings

All the public hearings run from 6:30 until 9 p.m. in the schools' auditoriums.

• Thursday – Southeast Raleigh High School

• Jan. 12 – Millbrook High School

• Jan. 14 – Fuquay-Varina High School

• Jan. 15 – East Wake High School

The current plan will force more than 25,000 students to change schools over the next three years.

Parents say board members should give more consideration to keeping students in their neighborhood schools.

"My cul-de-sac has 10 children on it. Wake County sends eight buses to my cul-de-sac for 10 kids. They go to three different elementary schools, they go to three different middle school, they go to two different high schools," parent Tracy Lawder said. "But at Apex High School, they would all return to base."

There are still four more public hearings before the school board votes on the reassignment plan.
