Energy efficient appliances tax free
RALEIGH -- Consumers will get a sales tax break this weekend if they buy an energy efficient appliance.

The North Carolina General Assembly created the sales tax holiday to encourage the use of energy efficient appliances. Consumers who buy certain items with the Energy Star logo on them will get the tax break.

Not all are happy about the program.

Some lawmakers and economists question why the state wants to suspend its sales tax during a time when its tax revenue is down. Businesses on the other hand say it may help them with their slump.

"I think it's a good thing for retailers especially with the economy now,” said Tony Chavis of Stanly Appliance. “It will drive the customers in to buy from us and on the other hand they're saving themselves some money in the long run."

The holiday lasts through Sunday.

Here are the appliances that are approved:

• clothes washers
• freezers
• refrigerators
• central/room air conditioners
• air source/geothermal heat pumps
• ceiling fans
• dehumidifiers
• programmable thermostats
