RALEIGH -- A bloody shoeprint, a newspaper delivery person and surveillance footage at a hotel room show the investigation into the murder of Raleigh mother Michelle Young has centered almost entirely on Young’s husband, Jason Young.

Michelle Young was beaten to death in her Raleigh home on Nov. 3, 2006. Jason Young said he was out of town on business at the time, and although no suspects have been named in the case, it appears Young is the main focus of the murder investigation.

Search warrants released Monday show that a bloody shoeprint at the scene was very similar to a pair of discontinued Hush Puppies shoes Jason Young bought from a Cary store in 2005.

Police also found Jason Young’s DNA near blood splatters on the wall of the couple’s bedroom.

Jason Young said he was away on business the night Michelle Young was killed. He checked into the Hampton Inn in Hillsville, Va. that night. Surveillance video shows he left the hotel around midnight wearing a dark pullover.

The exit door at the hotel had been propped open with a rock, so it’s possible Young could have re-entered the hotel without his keycard, but warrants showed that Jason Young’s hotel room door was not accessed again until the next morning when a maid went into the room to clean.

In addition to that, a newspaper delivery person said they saw a light-colored sports utility vehicle parked outside of the Young home in the early morning hours the next day, between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. Jason Young drives a white Ford Explorer.

Police said despite the fact that Young left his hotel room wearing a dark pullover, when he showed up at his mother’s home the next day, he was not wearing it and it has never been found.

The search warrants showed that in addition to Michelle and Jason Young’s home, investigators searched the homes of Jason’s relatives—one belonging to his sister and the home belonging to Young’s mother and stepfather—as well as storage unit Jason Young is renting.

A judge had sealed the search warrants since February, but unsealed them Monday.
