GREENSBORO -- A Guilford County organization says they need families in the community to step up and become foster parents to sibling groups. Neighbor to Family Inc says they've already had a lot of success and now they want to help more kids.

When Jeanne Reyes and her husband found out the kids they were fostering had three more siblings out there, they were heartbroken.

“The children we have were in many different homes and many different locations. It just made it very difficult for them to be together and them to do things together,” said Reyes.

That's when they decided to take all six kids in, and turned to Neighbor to Family Inc to help them make that a reality.

“They can deal without having the parents because it's usually the parents that's the trouble. But the kids need to be together and that's one thing that Neighbor to Family has been very instrumental on,” said Reyes.

Officials say it can be hard to explain the bond that siblings have. They share the same experiences and even hardships, which is why they say its important to keep them together.

“We have to consider that that's a basic need. That its not something additional. That children are able to live with their siblings, know who their siblings are and know that their sibling is OK,” Executive Director of Neighbor to Family Inc. Mary Dowdell said.

But she points out, they need the community's help to make this a reality for kids across the area.

“Your contributing to the overall big system when you reach out and help a child,” Dowdell said.

Reyes says she can't even put into words how much its changed her life.

“It's one of the easiest most rewarding things that you can ever do. It will touch your heart in so many ways,” Reyes said.

Dowdell says there is a process for you to go through in order to take in a sibling group. Find out how you can help here.
