WINSTON-SALEM — The Winston-Salem Forsyth County school board voted Tuesday night to suspend the school system's lawyer pending the results of an investigation by the SBI.
District officials voted unanimously to suspend Drew Davis for 90 days. The State Bureau of Investigations is looking into accusations that the district violated state law by failing to promptly report allegations of wrongdoing by two teachers in the last year. School officials said Davis did not report the incidents to law enforcement after he learned of them from administrators.
Steve Waddell was a teacher at parkland high school and was charged with one count of sexual battery and one count of indecent liberties with a student. he was fired earlier this year. The other incident involved Jason Ford, a teacher at Wiley Middle School. That case is still pending and Ford is suspended with pay as the investigation continues.
Winston-Salem Forsyth County School officials said they take these accusations very seriously and are cooperating with law enforcement.
“We have the same goals in mind as the district attorney and the law enforcement agencies in that the safety of our students is absolutely our number one priority. if students aren't safe, they're not going to learn. and second to that, parents need to have trust in us that their kids are safe,” said Theo Helm, spokesman for WSFCS.
Principals are required by law and state education policy to report any criminal offense involving school personnel that happens on or off school grounds.
