GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- People who live on Drake Road near Southern Guilford High School are pleased with the new paving on their street. They say contractors did a good job on the road, except for the spelling.

In big, bold, white letters the contractors wrote "SHCOOL."

"My dad is a sign painter and he's been painting signs all of his life and he saw it last night also," said Jonathan Long. "He got a kick out of it and he wanted to paint a sign, are you smarter than a first grader?"

Just a few yards away from the misspelling are two signs with the correct spelling.

"When you are looking at a sign and it's spelled correctly and you still can't spell it correctly, maybe you need to go back to school," said Phyllis Rollins.

A subcontractor from Traffic Markings did come back to fix the mistake but not before people got a permanent record.

"I'm going to put it in my scrapbook," said Phyllis Rollins.

While some will print photos just for laughs, others plan to post pictures of the "shcool zone" for everyone to see. "If you hire someone, you expect them to be able to spell a simple word that maybe a first grader can spell," said resident Elizabeth Sharp.
