ELON β A project at Elon University will save money and reduce the University's consumption of fossil fuels.
Crews are working on a geothermal field that will heat and cool five dorms on campus. The process requires drilling more than a hundred holes, each one 440 feet deep. While the drilling is time-consuming, university officials said the project will eventually pay for itself.
βIt saves money. So you can say 'why are you doing it?' For very good ethical reasons and for natural ones at the same time,β said Neil Bromilow, Director of Construction Management for Elon University.
Work on the project began in June and the drilling should be finished by the end of the week. However, it will be next summer before the system is in action, heating and cooling the five greener rooms.
