CHARLOTTE -- The popularity of text messages among teenagers prompted a North Carolina organization to create a sex education text line.
"They've got that phone in their hands until you tell them to put it down," said Michael Cato, an Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Campaign of North Carolina board member.
Studies show nearly 90 percent of teens have regular access to cell phones and they send hundreds, if not thousands, of messages a month. The "BRDSNBZ" text message campaign was established about a year and a half ago to answer sex health questions.
"If I can give a response to a teen in a way that they can understand it than they're better informed and hopefully they can make decisions that are better for them," said Cato.
The statewide text message line answers five to 10 questions a day. The organization takes more texts after-school hours and on weekends.
"Many of them are simple things like, 'can I get pregnant from and you can fill in the blank. We're able to answer those and really give true accurate information to teenagers," said Elizabeth Finley, of Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Campaign of NC.
She said it's a first-of-its kind program and they're talking to organizations around the world on how to model their text line.
College student Demetries Gibson said he, nor his sister, talked to their mother so a text hotline makes sense. "Teens can go get birth control without their parents permission," he said. "Texting sex questions is fine."
Many counties in North Carolina list teen pregnancy prevention and reducing incidents of sexually transmitted diseases as a priority. Organizers of the text line say this system can directly affect those statistics. "It's high on the list of so many of our counties and so many of our bigger counties like Mecklenburg and Durham County," said Finley.
To use the BRDSNBZ service, text "NC" to 36263 and then text your question. A reply message will be sent within 24 hours. The answer is confidential and is medically accurate.
