BURLINGTON, N.C. -- Officials said Alamance County is now better equipped to help victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. On Thursday, officials celebrated the opening of the Alamance County Family Justice Center. It houses several agencies like Family Abuse Services and Legal Aid of North Carolina making it easier for people to get help.

"This facility, this Family Justice Center will allow the victim to meet with professionals and try to determine what needs need to be addressed and address those needs right here, while the victim is here and safe," said Alamance Chief District Court Judge Jim Roberson.

The Family Justice Center has been in the works since 2002. It's a first for North Carolina.

"It is the first Family Justice Center and that's a movement across the United States. It started in San Diego back in 2002 and it has grown and spread across the country," said Alamance Co. Family Justice Center coordinator Deanna Manning.

The Alamance County Family Justice Center officially opened for business Wednesday. Since that time they've already served around a half dozen people.

"When you see the police and the advocates working together and in the same room and under the same roof, it gives you goose bumps," Manning said.

And community leaders like Roberson are happy to see Alamance County making an impact.

"And that just makes me proud to know that a group of people would get together and put the individual interest behind the interest of a group of folks that need our help. And that just makes me really proud," he said.
