GREENSBORO – Runway took on a new meaning Saturday morning at Piedmont Triad International Airport.

More than 1,000 runners and walkers hit the pavement on the airport’s new 9,000-foot runway to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, in honor of Kay Kirby, a local 14-year-old boy who has leukemia and whose father helped design the new runway.

In addition to the race, a dedication ceremony marking the runway’s opening was held. It featured special words from honorary guests like Rep. Howard Coble.

Airport authorities say Fed Ex planes and other commercial air traffic will use the new runway.

The winner of the PTI 5K on the Runway came in with a time of just more than 16 minutes.
