GREENSBORO – Before Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament play gets under way, teams have one hour to hit the hardwood and practice for the big game.
It's also a time where fans can check out the action and size up the competition against their team. Many fans expect this year to be a close race to the championship game.
“What better than watching some ACC basketball, watching them practice, check out the competition. Duke is not here, but we're getting a lot of practice in at home. We've got the bye, so we'll be rested,” Derek Shanaberger, a Duke fan, said.
And while the fans each had their favorite team, they were quick to point out this year it could be anyone's game.
“You know a lot of people say the ACC is down this year. I kind of disagree a bit. I think it's more of a level playing field. I don't think there's really one team that's head above shoulders better than the rest,” Dustin Stultz, a Duke fan, said.
Carl Hieb and his dad decided to check out Wednesday's practice. It was a pretty exciting day for the first grader.
“Because they're all active and stuff and they shoot the balls. But the worst part is the horn because it's so loud,” Hieb said.
But it wasn't just about checking out the action on the hardwood. For some fans, it's about getting a little inspiration before their own game gets under way.
“We're watching them because we've got a state tournament and coach is trying to get us focused for the state tournament to see how they are,” Antoine Bryant, a player from Wyetheville Community College, said.
And checking out some of the best college players in the game is what keeps all of these fans coming back.
“Always look forward to it. I'm a lifetime ACC fan and I always look forward to the tournament,” Sam Hieb, an N.C. State fan, said.
