WINSTON-SALEM – During Monday's forum at Winston-Salem State University, voters met with three of the Democratic candidates running for U.S. Senate.

"We have Elaine Marshall who is the secretary of state, Cal Cunningham who is a former state senator from this part of the state and Ken Lewis, who's an attorney from Durham. All three are considered to be the three front runners and are out working very hard to win their primary election and then run in the fall," David Young, chairman for the North Carolina Democratic Party, said.

Each candidate was given a chance to address the crowd on issues like job creation and the economy.

"The defining issue in this campaign will be jobs. The defining issue by which I want you to measure six hard working years in the U.S. Senate is how we create jobs," Cunningham said.

"The only way we're going to build this country strong again. The only way that we're going to compete in the world the way we are accustomed to competing in the future is if we build from the bottom up; that we invest in everybody; that no child can be wasted so that no opportunity can be wasted. That's the kind of United States senator I will be," Lewis said.

"In this race you're going to have people tell you what they want to do, what they will do, what they hope to do. I ask you to simply look at what I've done," Marshall said.

Three other people are in the running for the Democratic nomination. They are Marcus Williams, of Lumberton, Ann Worthy, of Gastonia, and Susan Harris, of Old Fort. The primary election will be held May 4.
