GREENSBORO – Home sales in Greensboro were down in January according to the Greensboro Regional Realtors Association. Representatives say the snow and ice in January took a toll on home sales. They say people don't house hunt in bad weather.
But real estate agents are hopeful that warmer weather will help the statistics.
“With all the rain, the below-freezing temperatures, of course the snow, we've seen less traffic than we typically do on weekends,” real estate agent Gail Ramsburg said.
A report from the groups shows 264 homes were sold in January compared with 398 homes that were sold in December.
The average cost of homes were down as well at around $137,000 compared with $184,000 in December.
''In January we were down approximately 34 percent from December,'' said Betty Smith, with Tate Realtors, the former president of the Greensboro Regional Realtors Association. ''When people can't get out and look, they certainly can't make decisions on buying. We really believe that's been the issue here.''
Realtors hope that in addition to warm weather, spring will also bring a thaw in the real estate market.
''The weather being better this past week, has gotten more people out, and we've gotten offers,'' said Smith.
Smith says there are other pluses for home buyers, including good interest rates and tax credits. And she said the real estate market also usually sees a bump around tax time.
