Fall is finally here six weeks into the North Carolina high school football season, and despite some wet weather in some parts of the state, most teams hit the field on their quest toward the championships.

The rubber met the road at East Mecklenburg as the Eagles played host to Independence. The Eagles stood 4-1, with their only loss coming to Mallard Creek on Sept. 4. Independence appeared to be in its usual dominant form – 5-0 and averaging 35 points per game.

At the Eagles nest, with Indy already up 7-0, Anthony Carouthers punched it in for another Patriot touchdown, making it 14-0 Indy.

But East Meck answered. Elgin Counts kept it and scored the touchdown – 14-7 with Indy still on top.

Anthony Carouthers used his arm the next time on a big touchdown pass to Avius Capers, making it 21-7 Patriots and literally bringing on the rain.

The Eagles went to their bag of tricks. Brandon Anderson took the pitch and looked to the end zone, hitting J.P. Phifer for the touchdown, putting East Meck down 21-13.

But Indy held on to win 35-13.

Out in the Triangle, aside from an opening week test against Middle Creek, the Pride of Leesville Road had laid waste to all challengers thus far, off to a 5-0 start. The Enloe Eagles were looking to take their best shot and bring an end to that winning streak.

The Pride put it on the board first. After an interception, Josh Stanley fired over the middle to Brandon Pittman for a 30-yard touchdown connection. The extra point was no good, putting Leesville Road up 6-0.

Later in the half, the Pride cashed in again. Stanley looked right and hit Thurston Cox for a 40-yard score, making it 14-0 after the 2-point conversion.

But the Eagles tried to get back in it – and did. Stanley's pass was picked off by Qwen Yarborough, but he wasn't satisfied with just the pick. Finding some room down the left side, he weaved his way to paydirt and a 33-yard touchdown. Enloe was down 14-7.

But the Pride wrestled the momentum away a little later on, with Ian Pryor soaring in to block the punt. Pittman recovered, leading to a touchdown.

Leesville road won 34 to 7.

Among the Triad headliners this week were perennial powers Carver and Mount Tabor, who planned to lock horns in the rain.

Mount Tabor was first and 10 on the 20-yard line during the first play of the game. Quarterback Brad Morton went back for the pass, but was picked off by Carver's No. 5 Matt Colon. He ran it 15 yards.

Carver found itself at fourth and nine, deciding to go for a field goal. But it was tipped by Mount Tabor and Trey Crosby III caught it, running it back to the 31, saving the score.

In the second quarter, Carver was second and eight on Mount Tabor's 37. Quarterback Mike Lawrence passed to Richard Daniels for a touchdown, putting Carver ahead 7-0.

But Mount Tabor pulled it off Friday night, winning 27-21.
