FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. – A one-stop shop for job training and assistance officially opened its doors Tuesday in Forsyth County.

The Regional Employment and Advancement Career Training Center, or REACT, was designed to provide advice and resources to unemployed workers.

It should help job seekers like Connie Davis by getting them more training or getting them back into the workforce.

“I've been laid off before and I always found another job very quickly. With my work experience, that's helped,” Davis said.

Before, she said it was always about getting back to work and getting both benefits and a paycheck.

“This time, I am taking time before I jump into another job, to see what I want to do,” Davis said.

That could mean going back to school to become a nurse.

“Whoever comes through the door, we're going to be able to provide all the access right here,” William Pass, assistant local area director of the Northwest Piedmont Workforce Development, said.

The center uses stimulus money to bring together a number of community agencies, all with one idea in mind: get people back to work.

“We've all kind of put our heads together and tried to figure what was needed in our community and to be able to help.” Pass said. “This was an opportunity right here to use some of that stimulus money to be able to provide a location, software and additional staff to be able to streamline the process with everybody getting enrolled and getting the training that's needed to get back into the workforce.”

And with a county unemployment rate just below the state average at 10 percent, Pass says it's needed now more than ever.

Many area agencies are working together on this project including Forsyth Tech, the Employment Security Commission and the Department of Social Services.
