DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. – State foresters are warning residents to be careful with fire over the holiday weekend. The July Fourth holiday means fireworks and lots of grilling and camping. All those things can increase the dangers of wildfires.

Forest rangers will be on the alert over the weekend since their computer models are showing drier conditions than they'd like.

"It shows there's less moisture in the fuel," said District Ranger Ron Hollifield. "Stuff is going to burn a lot easier, it's going to ignite a lot easier."

Hollifield said 85 percent of fires are caused by people, like a fire that scorched hundreds of acres at Sauratown Mountain in Stokes County last year. A campfire is thought to be the cause.

"We just want people to be careful. It's the Fourth of July, and a holiday, and part of the Fourth is grilling and camping out," said Hollifield. "Make sure you shoot [fireworks] in an area where you can see them land, and before you go to bed, check the area to make sure there isn't any ignition."
