HIGH POINT – What started out as an Internet commercial has turned a High Point furniture company into a YouTube success story.
The Red House Furniture Store's online commercial has seen more than 500,000 hits. And that attention has extended into the store.
"It's been crazy. The phones ring off the hook all day, every day, people calling just to see if it's a store," Steve Patalano, vice president of Red House, said.
Sales manager Richard "Big Head" Pina said he's been surprised by the reaction.
"Nobody was expecting it, and all of a sudden it was an overnight thing," sale manager Richard "Big Head" Pina said. "Small furniture is on the map, finally on the map."
But it's not just the catchy jingle that's causing this video to be a hot topic on national programs like CNN and TMZ – it's the video's message that the furniture store is loved by people of all races.
Producers Link Neal and Rhett McLaughlin say the message wasn't meant to cause controversy, but was an honest, humorous attempt at showing how people of all races work and shop at the small town furniture store.
"We did realize that our customer base was black and white and Hispanic, whatever, and that's what we did we ran with it," Pina said.
Palatano said it's been effective at drawing attention to the store.
"It may be racial, because you discuss race in the commercial, but certainly not racist," Patalano said. "They wanted to create a buzz and it worked."
Now, employees say the task has changed from making commercials and answering phone calls to selling furniture.
"Before all the hits, as you can see on YouTube, they came from all around the United States, but we need the business in North Carolina, more specifically here in High Point," Pina said.
