GREENSBORO – Two firefighters injured when a drunken driver ran into an accident scene over the weekend are talking about their near miss.

Darryl Boone and Jamie Harvey sustained minor injuries when a 16-year-old girl drove through the emergency lights, road flares and a police officer's signal at the scene of a wreck early Sunday morning.

She ran into the cars on the scene, which hit the firefighters and the victim they were treating.

Police later arrested the 16-year-old driver and charged her with driving under the influence as well as three counts of felonious hit and run.

It wasn't until later at the hospital that the two firefighters realized what could have happened.

"It happened so fast and you're moving and you're doing what you think you are supposed to be doing and then when you finally slow down and realize what happened – that's when it scared me," Harvey said.

As the two firefighters point out, this isn't the first time a rescue worker has been hit – and unfortunately, it won't be the last.

"It happens every day somewhere in the United States and it just happened to be us this time," Boone said. "Hopefully people will see this and take heed from it."
