County bans sex offenders from parks
Mecklenburg County commissioners approved the ban by an 8-1 vote Tuesday night.
CHARLOTTE -- County commissioners introduced a $250 million Park and Recreation bond Tuesday night while also ruling that sex offenders should be banned immediately from using any county park.
Commissioners approved the ban by an 8-1 vote Tuesday night. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department endorsed the ordinance and only Commissioner Valerie Woodard was in opposition.
Right now there are more than 600 registered sex offenders in Mecklenburg County. The ordinance follows the recently passed Jessica Lunsford Act.
Sex offenders will only be allowed to enter a park if it is being used as a polling place.
Meanwhile, the $250 million bond is now scheduled to be on the Nov. 4 ballot. If approved, the money will pay for the improvement and expansion of existing parks and new equipment. There will be a public hearing on the issue Sept. 3.
