GOLDSBORO – A Wayne County assisted living facility has been cited following a deadly outbreak of Hepatitis B.
The Division of Health Service Regulation released the citations follow a two week examination of health and welfare issues at the GlenCare of Mount Olive adult care living home.
Since October, eight patients have contracted the virus and five have died. State health officials say the facility may have used a single lancing device for blood-glucose monitoring on multiple patients.
"The best standard of practice is if you're going to use one machine for multiple residents you have to disinfect that machine between each resident. Also, the pins that are used to to lance the finger, to draw the blood, each resident should have their own pin," said Jeff Horton, of the Division of Health Service Regulation.
Officials say the facility will receive two fines for the virus outbreak. They have given GlenCare until this Friday to improve its safety issues or fines will be issued daily.
