FAYETTEVILLE—Business is starting to boom in Fayetteville now that the majority of Fort Bragg soldiers are home from deployments.

The recent return of the fourth brigade combat team means that it is the first time in years all four brigade combat teams of the 82nd Airborne Division are home at the same time. Military officials said there are still 3900 soldiers from the 18th Airborne Corps in Afghanistan and another 1700 in Iraq.

Money for single soldiers can build up quickly when deployed overseas and many like to treat themselves when they return home.

"It's a long list being worked out for soldiers while they are deployed,” said retired soldier Jose Perez. “They know how much money they have, and things they look forward to get when they are getting here."

Local business like to be prepared for the extra customers flooding stores.

"I knew that we have a big spike in inventory, so I stocked up about 85 bikes in inventory,” said Mark Handrix, general manager for Hotrodz. “The first week they were back, I sold 16 bikes."

They normally only sell 20 bikes in a month. Hendrix says their service goes beyond selling and repairing bikes, they also organize fun rides and social events for soldiers when they come home.

"We do try to provide that for them so that for them so they can just show up, not really think about it and ride with us, hang out with us and have a good time," said Hendrix.

Troops are constantly coming and going from Fort Bragg all the time, but this year there are going to be more troops home than usual.

"Recently, we heard from Fort Bragg that from now and January, we are expecting 80 percent of all troops home,” said Kristie Meave with the Fayettevillle/Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce. “That is very unusual for Fort Bragg where anytime of the year, we usually have about 50 percent deployment."
