FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Volunteers from Veterans Airlift Command are on a mission to help wounded veterans reunite with family.

Two days before she was supposed to return home after a yearlong deployment, Maj. Yvonne Heib was injured by a mortar blast at her base in Afghanistan.

"The mortar landed six feet away from me. Luckily I was sitting down. I am part of a surgical team, my own soldiers got to take care of me," she said.

Heib has had five surgeries since the attack in January and during her recovery, she hasn't been able to visit her family.

"Our company does business with the military; this is our way of giving back to them. Personally, as a pilot, I enjoy the satisfaction that comes from doing this," said volunteer Andre Bohy, president of Omni Financials.

During the seven-hour, cross-country flight, Heib will get the red carpet treatment.

"I am very honored that the Omni, they are volunteering their time to do this. I was actually quite surprised when they said, ‘sure we will pick you up and take you,’" she said.

With helpful hands to support her, Heib boarded the aircraft but what she is looking forward to seeing the most is her brother.

"I think I will get to see my brother cry," she said.
