ST. PAULS, N.C. – Volunteers delivered $4,000 worth of new dog beds to the Robeson County animal shelter Thursday.

Susan Barrett, who filed a lawsuit against the shelter for animal cruelty, says she is doing what she can for the animals during the legal process. She says she reached out to friends and family members to raise money to buy the beds.

"I know we're going through appropriate measures in court, but that's taking some time and the animals are still here and they need our help. And we're stepping up to make sure they're a little more comfortable while they are here," Barrett said.

On Thursday, the volunteers assembled the plastic beds, removed what Barrett calls "unacceptable plats" and introduced the animals to their new addition.

Robeson County Environmental Health Director Albert Locklear says the new beds are appreciated, but unnecessary.

"We appreciate any help that people give us. With the beds, my heart is that we already had beds, these are just beds that the activists prefer," Locklear said. "We try to accept them, we try to work with them in every way, but you know we did have adequate beds before these came."

But both Barrett and Locklear agreed volunteers are desperately needed at the shelter.

Barrett said she'll continue to do her part to ensure the animals at the shelter are as comfortable as possible, and the beds are a good start.

"It's the care of the animals that are here. And however we can make a difference to do that here, we'll do that, she said.
