FAYETTEVILLE – Fayetteville dedicated 1,300 flags for the Field of Honor in front of the Airborne Special Operations Museum Saturday. The field is a part of the city's Glory Days Celebration.
The flags will fly for 17 days until Glory Days wraps up on Memorial Day.
Korean War veteran Roland Bersch said the sight of thousands of flags flying stirs his heart.
"It is just so wonderful that we have the support for the military and the retired military and the former military and the veterans," he said.
As a part of the ceremony, flags were dedicated for soldiers past and present. All 1,300 of the flags were bought by residents for $25 each. The money raised by selling the flags goes to Fayetteville Cares, an organization that helps soldiers and their families while a soldier deploys overseas.
Veterans stood tall as they honored the flag they swore to protect. For the men and women actively serving, Col. John MacDonald, from Pope Air Force Base, said knowing they have the community's support makes it easier to wear the uniform.
"It reaffirms the reason we raise our right hand,” he said. “We know that we are respected. We know that our families are going to be taken care of."
Bersch plans to make a visit to the Field of Honor a yearly tradition.
"I was here last year when they had the first one, and I plan on being here for the rest of them," he said.
