FAYETTEVILLE – Michelle Obama paid a visit to Fayetteville and Fort Bragg Thursday, touring a community that is the home front for many soldiers fighting on the front lines in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The first lady, who was last in Fayetteville for a campaign stop in May, said that helping military families has been a major priority for her since her husband took office earlier this year.

Obama first met with soldiers at Iron Mike Cafeteria before making her way to the child development center on the base to talk with children of service members where she read them “The Cat in the Hat.”

Mattie Williams, who teaches the class the first lady visited, said it was an experience she plans to share with others.

“It is something I can tell my grandkids about, and I can talk to my children, my toddlers about it tomorrow. It was just a very good moment,” she said.

Later in the day, the first lady met with community organizers that support military families at the arts council building on Hay Street. (Watch Video.)

Fayetteville’s mayor, Tony Chavonne, told News 14 Carolina earlier this week that it means a lot that the city is being recognized for its dedication to taking care of soldiers and their families.

Also, military families said it means a lot for Obama to meet and take time to understand what it means to be married to a service member.

"Unless you're in the situation – like you're a part of the military, you have family members – you don't understand what is going on," said Sarah Walls, military spouse.
