POPE AIR FORCE BASE – Attorney General Roy Cooper made a trip to Pope Air Force Base Monday to talk about a problem he's sees much too often – scams targeting the military.
"I'll tell you, it's pretty low for someone to take advantage of our military who are risking their lives to protect our country," Cooper said.
Cooper said it's not uncommon. In fact, service men and women, particularly those at a young age, are often targeted by scam artists.
"Often military members are targets because, number one, they have a steady pay check that's really not enough, number two, often times they are young and impressionable and they are concentrated in one place," Cooper said. "So these scam artists can go in and take advantage of that."
Cooper said that's why Military Saves Week is so important. Over the week, airmen will be taught to save money, avoid scams, get rid of debt and live within their means.
"Our folks have the stability of a paycheck every two weeks," Air Force Col. John MacDonald said. "They need to use that to their advantage. We're giving them tools this week to focus on taking advantage, building wealth, avoiding debt, living within their means, knowing what services are out there."
Of course, it isn't just servicemen and women who are at risk, but Cooper said he has some simple advice for servicemen and women to protect themselves.
"Beware of any person who wants to charge you money up front for advice or help on paying debts or avoiding foreclosure," Cooper said. "That's the number one problem that we see right now."
