MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. -- Earlier this summer, Carteret County commissioners adopted a resolution to make all Carteret County parks tobacco free. The ban is not enforced and not all parks have signs advertising it so many visitors may be unaware of it.
There is no penalty for violations but county commissioners wanted the tobacco prohibition to serve as a an education tool about the danger of tobacco.
Swinson Park visitor Jasmine Singleton says she supports the effort.
"A lot of parents bring their children here," he said. "Obviously there's baseball parks and soccer fields where a lot of children come and play and I'm sure the last thing that parents or kids want to breath in is cigarette smoke."
The tobacco free resolution was adopted at the end of June and goes beyond smoking and includes other types of tobacco like chewing tobacco.
