Child struck by car while walking to school bus
ELIZABETHTOWN, N.C. -- A Bladen County boy is recovering after he was hit by a car while attempting to board the school bus. It happened around 7:30 a.m. Friday on highway 53 near Elizabethtown.
State troopers say 9-year-old Jaylin Peterson was trying to cross the road when he was hit by an on-coming car. The bus was stopped with its lights on and its stop sign extended.
Police say the driver of the car, 35-year-old Consuelo Washington, will be charged with failure to stop for a stopped school bus.
Peterson was transported to UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital when he was last listed in fair condition.
