SURF CITY, N.C. -- We're learning more about the death of a surfer in Surf City. Kurt Murray, 21, died Sunday. Witnesses tell police Murray fell off his surfboard and never surfaced.

His friends quickly told others in the area and they searched for Murray, eventually pulling him to shore. He was pronounced dead an hour later at Cape Fear Memorial Hospital.

There's no word whether rip currents or the high surf contributed to his death. Forecasters say waves were nine to 12 feet high Sunday.
